David J Twohig

Hi Joe,  Please confirm if you get this.  I got your email from The Picasa Album web site and went exploring.  I noticed the photo of the Twohig family, the one showing my grandmother as a girl.  You said you wanted the names of those in the photo.
Those standing in the back are Bartholomew (Bat), Henry, Nora, and David.  Standing just in front of Henry is George, and to his left is Liza (Never really knew my grandmother's name, I believe the given name was Elizabeth, and her nick names Liza or Eliza).  Laura (Doyle) stands in front of George, and Elmer stands to her left, leaning on his mother's knee.  David (the father) sits on the left (to the viewer) in the photo, and Bridget sits to the right.
Bartholomew, the oldest was named after his grandfather, Bartholomew Twohig, who is buried in Massachusetts.  I have no idea what Bartholomew did, whether or not he ever married, and where he died or is buried.
Henry became a physician, worked at the Fond du lac Clinic, married but I don't know to whom, I don't believe there were any children.  Henry died about 1946 or 47.  I do not know where he is buried, possibly Mt Calvary Cemetery in FDL.
Nora married James Peter Connell, they had 3 children, Laura May, John, and George.  I believe John was the oldest.  Nora died shortly after George was born (a maternal death).  Your "Aunt" Liza came to care for the children, George Connell knew no other mother.  Nora is buried at Mt Calvary Cem.
David became a physician, worked at the Fond du lac Clinic, married (I should remember) and had several kids.  David outlived his wife, as I knew him when he was older.  He died sometime in the 1950's after we had moved from FDL.  David was Barbara (nee Twohig) Haley's grandfather, and I'm certain she could fill you in on a lot of details.  If you need her email address, I have it.
George married Molly (?), I believe (I guess you would know that) and took over the farm, and had lots of kids.  Buried Armstrong??
Liza married James Peter Connell about 3-4 years after Nora had died.  If one marries his wife's sister, that is called deuterogamy, and requires a dispensation to do so in The Catholic Church (or at least did during those years).  They had one child, Margaret (my mother).  James Peter Connell died in 1917.  Liza lived a long time afterward, dying in 1955.  Both are buried at Mt Calvary.
Laura was considered the most beautiful of all the sisters.  She became a teacher, and worked in the public school system of FDL.  She did not marry until she was 40ish, give or take some years.  Her husband James Doyle died about a year following their marriage.  Laura never remarried.  When I knew Aunt Laura she was living with my grandmother, Liza in the house on 55 So Park in FDL.  Laura was a great story teller, knowing all the fairy tales by heart.  She would keep me and my cousins entranced for what seemed hours.  She also knew a lot of family history and would tell us about her father, and about Indians that had lived in the area, and the story of how her grandfather (Hardgrove) had traveled to Green Bay to file a homesteading claim.  The Twohigs paid for their farms, a fact which Aunt Laura told they never allowed the Hardgrove's to forget.  Laura lived to age 93, dying in the Henry Boyle Retirement Home on Christmas in 1977.  She is buried at Mt Cal.
Elmer became a physician and worked at the FDL Clinic.  He married Nell (Helen).  They had no children of their own, but adopted twin girls Mary and Ann.  Mary and Ann were my age, about 6 months older.  I have Mary's email if you need it for any details.  Elmer died I believe in the late 50's or early 60's.  He and Nell are buried at Mt Cal.
James Peter Connell, was my grandfather.  He was responsible for starting the FDL Clinic, then died the day it opened its doors.  Aunt Laura told me that he was doing surgery at St Agnes Hosp. that morning and had a heart attack while in surgery.  He completed the surgery, went into an adjoining room to lie down, and died there.  She said Rose Twohig who was an OR nurse was with him when he died.  I remember Rose as she was the nurse who administered anesthesia to me when my tonsils were removed (I was about 4 yrs. at the time).  Aunt Laura also told me that Dr. Connell was the impetus that started the plans for St Agnes Hospital.  I know his photo is not among those in the family photo, but I mentioned him so often, I just thought to add this part.
To me any important part of Twohig history is the House at 55 So Park Ave. in FDL.  I don't know when it was originally built, but in the early 1900's.  Laura told me that it was the 1st home in FDL with and indoor bathroom.  I later found out that it was the 1st that had been built that way.  There were homes in FDL before then that had added bathrooms.   It was always a 2nd home to me when I lived in FDL.  I learned later that family from the farm would stay there while attending school in FDL or for other reasons.  It and the farm served as a center of family activity.  Laura often would tell me of her visits back to the farm, something she often did.  I wish she would have taken me with her on some of those visits.  Before WW II, my parents would visit the farm a few times each year, with my brother an sisters.  My sister Sheila was good friends with Patricia Twohig and my brother Bob knew Robert.  But following the war I don't think they ever went there.  At least they never took me if they did.  I visited Bob Twohig at the farm in 2005, and he took Rose and me all around the property and over to the church.  We even went into the old house that needs a lot of repair.  I got out in front and stood just to south and east near the road.  I told Bob that I recalled standing there as a small child and looking at the house.  Bob looked at me and said, "I remember you standing there, you were a busy little tyke."
With all this activity you have started lately are you thinking of another Twohigfest?  Are you living in California now?  If so, one of my Aunt Laura May (nee Connell) Clark's daughters is living in Camarillo, California.  Also Jim Connell (George Connell's son) lives in Nuevo, California.
Well have a Happy New Year,
Dick (Richard) Finn
